The saying goes: “He who is ignorant of the past is condemned to repeat it.”  I believe that statement, and that’s one reason I have spent much of my life studying history.

History runs in cycles because we are ignorant of the past. It’s true of nations, families, and individuals. The past always seems to repeat itself unless we learn its lessons and make different choices.

Christians believe that God is the Lord of history and history is meant to teach us. Unfortunately, we are so very slow to learn.

Some argue that the United States will always be spared from trouble because we are a “christian nation.” That was the belief of many Americans just before World War One, World War Two, and the Great Depression. “God will always protect us” or “The Rapture will happen first” are statements I’ve heard and continue to hear.
